Dry Belongings are Happy Belongings

Nothing is worse than opening that storage unit garage door and being welcomed by something that smells like it’s been around since the prehistoric period. To avoid smells and the decay of certain belongings, make sure the following items are dried and drained of all water:

  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Humidifiers/dehumidifiers
  • Washing machines
  • Kids toys that were stored outside
  • Fish tanks
  • Lake/pool floaties

Items You Should Never Store

  • Food
  • Combustible items (gasoline, propane, paints, solvents)
  • Anything that once contained moisture that’s not been properly cleaned and dried (you would be amazed what can grow)

How to Store Refrigerators

Placing wooden wedges in the door between the rubber seal will allow air to flow in and out. This will make sure there aren’t any unwanted smells that form while it sits.

What Kind of Coverings to Use

Make sure to use cloth, not plastic. Plastic holds in moisture and you will want to avoid that as much as possible. Canvas works great or even some of your older sheets.

How to Prevent Odors

Place coffee or baking soda in old pantyhose and place them around the unit. This will help absorb any musty smells.

Plan Where Things Go

Put furniture along the inside walls and stack on top of them. Then make sure items you will need access to are the last things put in. Sometimes it helps to even leave a little wiggle room so you can get to those items with ease.

Label Everything

You will not remember which box has that one thing you need. You can’t be too specific in your labeling or too organized, so go to town color coding and even having a “key” you can refer to.

Save Space When You Can

Store smaller items in the refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, and drawers to use all available space.
